Dubai has officially unveiled Al Layan Oasis, a massive new desert tourism destination designed to redefine outdoor experiences in the emirate. Spanning one million square metres, the ambitious project aims to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year while balancing eco-tourism, recreation, and sustainability.
Announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the project represents another major step in the city’s long-term vision to expand green spaces, promote healthy lifestyles, and showcase the natural beauty of the desert landscape.
A Landmark Built Around Water and Nature
At the heart of Al Layan Oasis will be a man-made lake covering approximately 250,000 square metres, making it one of the most striking desert attractions planned in recent years. The lake will serve as the project’s visual and recreational centrepiece, surrounded by landscaped zones and outdoor facilities aimed at both residents and international tourists.
The project’s design focuses on creating “unprecedented desert tourism experiences,” blending nature with modern leisure facilities. Officials say the development will also support environmental preservation by introducing native planting and shaded green areas across the site.
Walking, Cycling and Elevated Views
A major highlight of the project is its extensive mobility network aimed at encouraging active lifestyles:
-
14 km of walking and cycling paths
-
4 km of elevated pathways rising about five metres above ground
-
Panoramic viewing routes overlooking the oasis
-
Connections to existing trails in Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve
These elevated tracks are expected to become one of the signature attractions, allowing visitors to enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding desert and lake environment.
