GPS Glitches Reported Across UAE as Navigation Apps Show Incorrect Locations Amid Regional Tensions

Dubai | March 12, 2026

Drivers and residents across the UAE have reported unusual glitches in popular navigation apps such as Google Maps and Waze, with some users noticing their locations appearing far from their actual positions over the past few days.

The issue has sparked widespread discussion online, with many residents sharing screenshots and videos showing their phones displaying incorrect locations or unexpected routes. While some social media users treated the situation humorously, experts say such disruptions can occur due to technical interference affecting satellite signals, especially during periods of heightened regional security.

Signal Interference May Be the Cause

Mahammad Haneef, Head of Digital Transformation at MBRSC Lab, explained that temporary GPS disruptions sometimes occur during conflicts due to security measures that affect satellite signals used by navigation systems.

According to Haneef, certain techniques used by security agencies — such as GPS jamming and GPS spoofing — can unintentionally impact civilian navigation systems.

GPS jamming involves blocking satellite signals, while GPS spoofing sends false signals to devices,” he said. “Because navigation apps rely on these same satellite signals, such actions can sometimes cause inaccurate locations or unexpected routes to appear.”

Temporary Errors Possible During Signal Disruptions

Even minor disturbances in satellite communication can briefly cause smartphones to show incorrect positions.

“Small interference can make a navigation app display the wrong location for a short period of time,” Haneef added. “In most cases, the system corrects itself quickly once the signal stabilises.”

He emphasised that navigation apps remain largely reliable and that such incidents are usually temporary rather than the result of cyberattacks.

“Applications like Google Maps have strong security systems and generally function normally. Most disruptions are related to signal interference or security measures rather than hacking,” he said.

Social Media Reacts With Humor

Residents across the UAE quickly took to social media platforms after noticing unusual behaviour in their navigation apps. Some users reported that their locations suddenly appeared several kilometres away from their real position, while others saw strange routes appearing on their screens.

In one viral Instagram video, a real estate agent named Sangam joked about the situation while advising new drivers not to rely entirely on GPS navigation.

Laughing in the clip, he suggested that drivers who recently received their driving licences should first familiarise themselves with local roads instead of blindly following GPS directions.

“Otherwise,” he joked, “you might end up somewhere completely different — maybe even in another country.”

Navigation Still Safe to Use

Despite the recent glitches, experts say navigation apps remain safe and dependable for everyday use. Any temporary errors caused by signal interference are usually resolved quickly once satellite signals stabilise.

However, authorities and experts recommend that drivers remain aware of their surroundings and use navigation tools as a supportive guide rather than the only source of direction, particularly during periods of regional security activity.
